Pragmat's Paul Collier "Left Behind" Competition Rules

1. Eligibility for Entry
The Paul Collier "Left Behind" Competition is open to all students attending UK schools, specifically those in Years 12 and 13.

2. Verification of Eligibility
We will verify the eligibility of the shortlisted candidate by contacting their school directly. Participants who do not meet the eligibility criteria will be disqualified from the competition.

3. Prizes and Winner Announcements
There will be one winner of the competition, who will receive the following prize:

Exclusive Interview with Paul Collier: The winner will conduct a one-on-one interview with Sir Paul Collier, either virtually or in person, depending on availability.

Publication: The winner’s book response will be posted on Pragmat.

If the winner is under 18 years of age, written permission from a parent or guardian is required to conduct the interview. If permission is not granted, Pragmat will be unable to deliver the prize.

The winner does not have the right to publish their interview with Sir Paul Collier anywhere other than Pragmat. The interview, once conducted and written up, must be posted on Pragmat and cannot be published elsewhere unless permission is granted by Pragmat.

4. Submission Requirements
Participants are required to submit one of either on Paul Collier's new book "Left Behind":

a. A book review
b. A critical response
c. An application of the main arguments to a case study

The submission should reflect critical thinking, a deep understanding of the book's content, and align with the style of articles posted on Pragmat.

5. Word Count Limit
The maximum word count for the submission is 1,200 words. There is no minimum word limit. Titles are not included in this word count.

6. Key Dates
Portal Opens: September 30th at 12:00 BST.

Submission Deadline: November 4th at 12:00 BST.

Winners Announcement Date: December 2nd at 12:00 BST.

7. Competition Structure
The competition will be adjudicated by our in-house editorial team, who will create a shortlist of the top entries. Sir Paul Collier will then make the final decision on the winner.

8. Judging Criteria
While there is no fixed success criterion, the following traits however are expected in top submissions:

Analytical Depth: Entrants should critically engage with the key themes and arguments presented in Left Behind. Break apart the terms of the book’s arguments, exploring underlying assumptions and the broader implications.

Balanced Opinions: While opinions are welcome, avoid overly polemic or biased perspectives. Construct strong, well-supported arguments, but apply sensitivity where appropriate.

Contextual Awareness: Utilise historical and contemporary examples to support your analysis. Expand on an international scope when relevant to compare different regions or highlight the global impact of the issues discussed in the book.

Research and Evidence: Engage deeply with existing literature and resources. Use research to frame and substantiate your arguments, but avoid turning the response into a literature response. Focus on using the literature to enhance your analysis.

Clarity and Focus: Ensure that your response directly addresses the book’s key themes. The word limit is designed to encourage concise and cogent analysis. Avoid straying from the main points to ensure a well-structured and focused submission.

9. Citation Policy
All external references must be cited via in-text citations with no footnoting. Examples:

"Sir Paul Collier argues that ‘economic prosperity is achievable even for those regions left behind’ (Collier, 2024)."
"According to Collier (2024), effective policy implementation is crucial for regional development."
10. Rights to Submitted Work

By submitting the response, participants grant Pragmat the right to post the response on the site in accordance with the "Article Submission" section found within the general Pragmat Terms and Conditions.

11. Single Entry Policy
Each participant is allowed to submit only ONE response for the competition. Multiple submissions from the same individual will not be accepted.

12. Age Requirements
To maintain fairness, we cannot accept entries from students who do not fall within the specified year groups (Years 12-13). We encourage younger students to apply in the appropriate year.

13. Plagiarism & AI Check
All submissions will be screened for plagiarism and the use of AI using our internal systems to ensure originality. Response that are found to be plagiarised or contain text that isn't cited appropriately will be disqualified.

14. Confirmation of Submission Receipt
Participants will receive a confirmation email once their response has been successfully submitted to the email that they filled in the registration form. (Please check Spam folder)

15. Final Submission Policy
Once a response is submitted, no further changes or updates can be made. We cannot accommodate requests to amend submitted entries.

16. Strict Deadline Adherence
Our submission deadline is final, and no extensions will be granted. We encourage students to submit their responses well before the deadline to avoid last-minute issues.

17. Notification of Results
Participants will be notified of their results after all entries have been thoroughly reviewed. The winner will be announced via email on December 2nd and will be contacted privately regarding their prize.

18. Submission Method
